Abstract
Organic hydroperoxides of the formula <FORM:0754862/IV(a)/1> in which R1 and R2 represent alkyl, preferably lower alkyl, and Ar is aryl or substituted aryl, are decomposed with a mineral acid, e.g. sulphuric, in a rotary pump which is not more than half full, the ratio of hydroperoxide to mineral acid being between 1 : 14 and 1 : 20. The excess acid keeps the temperature low, and the reaction mixture is cooled after leaving the pump. Supersonic waves may be used. Reference is made to the production of acetone and phenol or p-cresol or naphthol from cumol, cymol, and isopropylnaphthalene hydroperoxides respectively. A conventional form of apparatus is described.
