Abstract

754,788. Windscreen cleaners. LETHBRIDGE W. REED-. July 8. 1954 [Aug. 6, 1953], No. 20056/54. Class 138(1) A windscreen wiper arm is provided with a wheel to support the arm at a uniform distance from a windscreen, and mounting means for the securement of a wiper blade to the arm to allow of adjustable movements of the blade relative to the arm so as to alter the pressure of the blade on the windscreen. The wiper arm 5, Fig. 1, comprises an inner bar 5a, pivoted to a boss 4 secured to the wiper spindle 1, an outer bar 5b lockable to the bar 5a as by a screw 9 engaging in slots 6b of two plates (of which only one, 6 is shown) secured to the bar 5a. and a rod 5c, screwed into the bar 5b. If desired a single rigid bar pivoted to the boss 4 may replace to two bars 5a, 5b shown. Mounted on the bar 5b or the single bar, as the case may be, is a rubber or rubber-tyred wheel 11 which contacts the windscreen 3, the contact being maintained by a spring 13 between the wiper arm and a washer 15 on the spindle 1. On the outer end 5e of the rod 5c is mounted a sleeve 16, Fig. 4, disposed between collars 17. 18 secured to the rod. A tongue 18b on the collar 18 engages in a recess 16c in the end of the sleeve to permit of slight angular movement of the sleeve on the rod. A block 20 mounted on a threaded portion 16b of the sleeve pivotally carries by a pin 20a a bell-crank 19 to which the wiper blade 12 is pivoted, at 21. The bell crank is urged towards the windscreen by a spring 23 and the pressure of the blade on the screen is adjusted by a nut 22 on the portion 16b of the sleeve. The angular movement of the sleeve 16 in the rod 5c permits the blade to assume an inclined trailing position on the windscreen. In a modification as described with reference to Fig. 7 (not shown) an adjusting screw on the bell-crank engages a fixed portion of the sleeve and no screwed portion is provided on the sleeve. If desired the block 20 may be screwed directly on to the rod 5c, the feature of the blade being able to incline relative to the rod then be omitted. The wheel 11 may be situated close to the spindle 1 or at the outer end of the complete wiper arm, and in all cases the wheel may be caused to engage at ramp, when the wiper is in the parked position, whereby the arm and blade will be raised from the windscreen.
