Abstract
978,450. Rear-view mirrors. H. P. SMALLBONE. July 31, 1963 [Aug. 9, 1962], No. 30521/62. Heading B7J. An external rear-view mirror for a vehicle comprises a holder 1, a reflector 2 and a pivotable wiper blade 3 to clean the surface of the reflector, the blade being secured to a spindle 4 mounted in bearings 5 in the holder, the spindle being rotatable in one direction by a compressed air bellows 6 against the urge of a spring 11. One end 6a of the bellows is secured to the holder 1 and connected at 12 to a source of compressed air through a manually operable valve (not shown) in the vehicle. The other end 6b carries a rod 7 slidable through a sleeve 8 carried by the holder. The end of the rod 7 has a shoulder 7a carrying a peg 9 engaging the bifurcated end of an arm 10 secured to the spindle 4. Another arm 13 secured to the spindle is connected to one end of the spring 11 whose other end is secured to the holder. The bellows may be suction operated. If desired, the wiper may be operated by a flexible cable either manually or by an electric motor.
