Abstract

Fluoroketals and fluoroacetals are obtained by condensing a fluorinated ketone or a fluorinated aldehyde with a hydroxy carbon compound. If a polyhydroxy carbon compound is employed, a heterocyclic compound is obtained. According to Examples: (1) a mixture of dry ethyl alcohol, ammonium chloride and a -trifluoroacetone is kept at 15 DEG C. for 1 week, the resulting ketal being recovered by distillation; (2) a mixture of mannitol, concentrated sulphuric acid and a -trifluoroacetone is shaken at 15 DEG C. for 4 days, the mixture then being diluted with water, extracted several times with chloroform, the extracts washed with NaHCO3, dried and evaporated to give a residue which on distillation in vacuo gave the pure triketal; (3) a mixture of sorbitol sulphuric acid and a -trifluoroacetone is similarly treated to give the triketal; (4) a mixture of mannitol, heptafluorobutyraldehyde and sulphuric acid similarly treated gives a mixture of acetals. By using less ketone or aldehyde partially substituted ketals or acetals may be obtained. The products may be used as stable oils, hydraulic fluids, heat transfer media or solvents.
