Abstract
A halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon is used as solvent for the recovery of the product in (a) the condensation of formaldehyde with isobutyraldehyde to give a : a - dimethyl - b - hydroxypropionaldehyde, (b) the formation of a -hydroxy-b : b -dimethyl-g -butyrolactone from a : a -dimethyl - b - hydroxypropionaldehyde by converting the latter first into its bisulphite compound and then into the cyanhydrin, followed by hydrolysis and formation of the lactone by heating the resulting acid with water, (c) the extraction of the l-lactone in the resolution of the racemic mixture of a -hydroxy-b : b -dimethyl - g - butyrolactones. In examples, ethylenedichloride, methylenechloride and chloroform are used as solvents in the above processes; propylenedichloride and trichlorethylene are also mentioned.
