Abstract
747,459. Aircraft undercarriages. BLACKBURN & GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and THIRSK, W. H. June 25, 1954, No. 18712/54. Class 4. A retractable undercarriage for aircraft comprises a rigid leg 1 pivoted at its upper end to the aircraft for sideways retraction and pivotally attached at its lower end to a freely swinging arm 2 which supports a landing wheel 3. The arm 2 is pivotally connected to a shock absorber 4 connected at its upper end to an arm 8 pivoted to the leg 1 and fast with a bevel pinion 9 meshing with a further pinion 10 connected by a shaft 11 to a gear wheel or sector 12 in turn meshing with a fixed sector 13. The leg is retracted by a jack 7 through a back-stay 5, 6 and during retraction movement of the leg about its pivot the sector 12 is caused to roll round the sector 13 and thereby rotate arm 8 and the movable undercarriage elements from the full line to the chain-dotted position shown in Fig. 1. To relieve the link 8 of taxying loads a stop 14 is provided for engagement by the cylinder of the shock absorber and the leg may carry a fairing panel to close a structural opening when the undercarriage is retracted.
