Abstract
1,019,908. Aircraft undercarriages. ELECTRO-HYDRAULICS Ltd. Aug. 4, 1964 [Sept. 2, 1963], No. 34603/63. Heading B7G. A retractable undercarriage for aircraft comprises a main leg having a first component, with a second component sliding within it, and shock absorbing means, the outer tube of which lies within the first component, the shock absorbing means being lifted bodily and under no compression during retraction of the undercarriage and mechanism which during retraotion of the undercarriage raises the second component within the first component. The undercarriage comprises an upper component 2 and a lower telescoping component 4 containing a shock absorber 34 enclosed within a tube 35 connected at its lower end to the shock absorber piston, the tube 35 being slidable within component 2. A telescopic bracing strut 5, containing down locks, is connected to the component 2 by a pivot 22 to which is attached an arm 24 connected by link 26 to a further arm 25, the arm 25 being fast on a pivot with a further arm 27 in the upper part of component 2. The arm 27 is connected by link 29 to the upper end of shock absorber 34. In operation, down locks in strut 5 are released and a jack 15 retracts the undercarriage to the dotted line position in Fig. 1, the resulting rotation of pivot 22 operating through the linkage to swing arm 27 through the arc indicated by dotted lines and thereby draw the shock absorber and component 4 upwardly into component 2 to shorten the undercarriage.
