Abstract
Waste cell conglomerates with or without bran and a little starch obtained in the purification of starch (see Group V) are worked into fodder. Specifications 686,072 and 717,918, [both in Group V], are referred to.ALSO:In purifying starch, e.g. maize starch, starch milk from which particles above a selected size between 100 and 200 microns, preferably between 100 and 130 microns have been screened, is separated in a vortex separator into a fraction from the outer part of the vortex containing most of the particles over a selected size between 40 and 80 microns, e.g. coarse cell conglomerates and any sand and rust present, and a fraction from the inner part of the vortex containing most of the particles under the said selected size between 40 and 80 microns, e.g. fine starch, gluten and bran. The selected size for separation may be 60 microns. The vortex separator may be a hydrocyclone or a multihydrocyclone, e.g. of the kind described in Specification 686,072. The overflow fraction may be passed to starch tables or separators or treated as described in Specification 717,918 to separate starch from gluten. Two or more hydrocyclones or multihydrocyclones may be used in series. The overflow fraction from the second and any following hydrocyclones may be returned to the first hydrocyclone. The separated starch may be washed and dried.
