Abstract
Stable aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic melamine formaldehyde syrups are prepared by adding to a solution, containing not more than 80 per cent of a condensate condensed to such a degree that it has a water tolerance between 1 : 1 and 1 : 4, an amount of 0.01-2 per cent of borax or its equivalent, e.g. boric acid or sodium metaborate and sodium hydroxide. The melamineformaldehyde condensate is preferably prepared by refluxing the ingredients at pH 8-9. The solution is then cooled to below 50 DEG C. and may then be diluted with water and/or ethyl alcohol to the desired solids content, or free formaldehyde and some water may first be removed by distillation in vacuo at below 50 DEG C. The borax may then be added as an aqueous solution. Alternatively the borax may be added after the condensation and prior to concentration in vacuo, or as a solution in the water, alcohol or aqueous alcohol used for adjusting the solids content of the syrup. Latent catalysts, fillers or plasticizers may be added to the syrup.
