Abstract

A stable semicondensate suitable for impregnating paper (see Group VIII) is made by mixing a phenol with an aqueous solution of formaldehyde in presence of an amount of caustic alkali acting as catalyst for the condensation which is not less than 3 per cent of caustic soda or than the equivalent amount of other caustic alkali (calculated on the weight of material in the mixture other than water), such conditions of heat conservation and concentration of formaldehyde being employed that the reaction mixture can heat itself to a temperature of at least 65 DEG C., and the reaction is interrupted after a temperature of 50 DEG C. has been reached but before a temperature of 65 DEG C. has been exceeded and while the reaction mixture, when containing an amount of water corresponding to the use of 40 per cent formaldehyde in the condensation, has a viscosity of 12-30 centipoises measured at 20 DEG C. The reaction is preferably interrupted when the viscosity at 20 DEG C. is 12-16 centipoises, or when the temperature is 57-62 DEG C. or 59-61 DEG C., and the interruption may be effected by dilution or by neutralization of the catalyst. The catalyst is preferably caustic soda in an amount of 3-7 per cent based on the weight of materials other than water in the reaction mixture. Examples describe the preparation of condensates from formaldehyde and phenol, m- or p-cresol, or o-chlorophenol in presence of caustic soda, and the addition of solutions or emulsions of the partly-neutralized condensates formed with gum arabic and gum tragacanth to paper pulp, e.g. wood pulp, or paper web. Specifications 467,081, 467,899 and 553,122, [Group VIII], are referred to.
