Abstract

Styrenated drying oil-modified alkyd resins are prepared by heating the alkyd resin in solution with styrene, and when the initial rapid polymerization has ceased adding methyl or ethyl methacrylate. The alkyd resin is styrenated in xylene, toluene or mixtures thereof with mineral spirits in the presence of a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide, butyl hydroperoxide, azobis-(isobutyronitrile) and azo-bis-cyclohexanecarbonitrile, preferably while refluxing. The methacrylate may be added portionwise together with further catalyst, and the product is fractionally distilled to remove monomers. In examples castor oil- and linseed oil-modified alkyd resins derived from glycerine and phthalic anhydride, and similar alkyd resins modified with rosin are treated with styrene and methyl methacrylate, and the products dissolved in xylene with cobalt naphthenate to give an airdrying varnish.
