734,310. Cycle driving-mechanism. ANDREW, W. R. Feb. 19, 1953, No. 4739/53. Class 136(2). In a bicycle mechanism for the transmission of power, force on the bicycle pedals moves slotted levers C, which levers using the rear wheel axle D as fulcrums move pistons F in hydraulic cylinders G, G<SP>1</SP>, G<SP>2</SP>, G<SP>3</SP> causing fluid to move rams J, J<SP>1</SP> coupled by gear chains S to ratchet wheels P operating a large gear wheel R to turn the rear wheel of the vehicle. The slots B in the levers C are shaped to make the up and down movement of the levers uniform when they are moved by the spindle A. Each lever C moves two pistons F, the pistons being coupled to each lever C by rods E on each side of the fulcrum D and at equal distances from the fulcrum. Piping J<SP>2</SP> connects the ends of the rams J, J<SP>1</SP> so that the rise of the ram J returns the ram J<SP>1</SP> into position for the next movement of the lever C. Piping K connects cylinders G<SP>1</SP> and G<SP>2</SP> and piping K<SP>1</SP> connects cylinders G<SP>3</SP> and G. Further piping K<SP>2</SP> containing a free piston V, connects the cylinders G<SP>1</SP> and G<SP>2</SP> with a cylinder of the seat pillar, putting the fluid under pressure. A free piston may be provided in a tubing V which connects a pair of cylinders G2 and G3 or G and G<SP>1</SP>. A flat steel spring T is used to hold the gear chain S against the ratchet wheel P. The ratchet wheels P and gear wheel R are mounted on a shaft N running in bearings on the frame M.
