Abstract

728,495. Dashpots. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 8, 1953 [Dec. 8, 1952], No. 34161/53. Class 108 (3). A dashpot comprises a piston movable in a cylinder A against the action of a spring E; the piston consisting of a number of discs F, I, L ... , each having a respective orifice G, K, N ... , the orifice G opening into an annular groove J in the second disc I, the orifice K being misaligned with the orifice G, and leading from the annular groove J to open into an annular groove M in the third disc L, and so on, so as to provide a labyrinthine path between the first and last discs of the piston. The outward movement of the piston is limited by a shoulder V which ensures that all the discs are covered with liquid when the piston is at rest. The shoulder V may, however, be constructed so as to be adjustable. A pair of spring discs may be disposed between the pistonretaining nut U and a washer T. The discs overhang the orifice G and deflect towards the orifice G on movement of the piston, to restrict the flow therethrough (Fig. 2, not shown).
