Abstract
716,680. Cigarette lighters. COLIBRI LIGHTERS. Ltd., and LOWENTHAL, H. July 14, 1953 [July 28, 1952], No. 19032/52. Class 75 (3) The windshield of a friction lighter comprises two or more telescopically-mounted parts which, when extended, will at least partly enclose the flame but when telescopically closed will expose the flame either wholly or to a greater extent than when extended. As shown in Fig. 2, three parts 15, 16, 17 each U-shaped in plan, are pivoted together by pins 18. Outwardly projecting lips 19 on the upper edges of parts 15, 16 engage with inwardly projecting lips 20 on the lower edges of parts 16, 17 to limit the extended movement and the lips 19 engage with inwardly directed bulges 21 of parts 16 and 17 to tend yieldably to resist movements of the parts in their extreme open and closed positions. One or more of the parts may have perforations for the passage of air to the flame. The shield may be detachably mounted by providing the innermost part 15 with an inwardly directed flange 29, Fig. 7, wider near the loop end and having a slot 27 adapted for engagement with an undercut 28 on the nipple 25, Fig. 8, the slot 27 having a narrower portion 26 arranged to pass over the undercut for the limbs of the part 15 resiliently to resist disengagement of the slot from the undercut. In the modification shown in Fig. 9 the telescoping parts 30, 31, 32 are cylinders each with a gap in one side, all the gaps being aligned. This shield may be fixed by passing the nipple through the opening in the flange 33 before securing to the body of the lighter or by means of a flange and undercut as in Figs. 7 and 8.
