Abstract

685,447. Resilient supports; rail vehicle undercarriages. COOK, C. A. (RIV-Officine di Villar Perosa Soc. per Azioni). March 23, 1949, No. 7943/49. Classes 103 (vi) and 180 (iii). In a rubber spring suspension comprising a tubular rubber member interposed between two coaxial rigid sleeves of which the contact surfaces are formed at least in part by substantially conical surfaces which converge in the same axial direction, the outer contact surface being more convergent than the inner, the tubular rubber member is mounted with respect to the rigid sleeves so that the area of contact between the rubber member and the sleeves progressively changes as axial relative displacement of the sleeves takes place under variations of applied load, the rubber member being simultaneously subjected to compression and rolling along the contact surfaces. In the arrangement according to Fig. 1, an annular rubber element 3 is interposed between and adheres to partly tapered coaxial surfaces 1 and 2 and under axial loading is deformed as shown in the right-hand side of the Figure. In another arrangement, Fig. 4, as applied to a spring suspension for a rail bogie a pair of upper and lower rubber elements 15, 14 are interposed between associated oppositely tapered outer members 11, 12 and corresponding surfaces of an inner member 13 common to both elements. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the inner member is formed in two parts, the lower part being connected to the upper outer member, so that the rubber elements operate in series.
