Abstract

662,744. Universal joints. GEAR GRINDING MACHINE CO. Oct. 19, 1948 [Nov. 3, 1947], No. 27147/48. Class 80 (ii) [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXIV] The lubrication of the centre tie connection of a constant velocity universal joint is effected by a reciprocating cylinder pump acting radially inwards and actuated by the oscillation of the joint. As shown, the joint comprises members A, B, having lugs C connected for torque conveyance by groove located balls B, a centre ball end socket joint F, G and a cylindrical casing I the end of which is closed by a flexible annular member J, preferably vulcanised to a sleeve K telescoped on the casing I and secured by a metal ring 4<SP>1</SP> to the member B. Lubrication of the joint F, G is effected through bores Q<SP>2</SP>, R by a pump in one lug C comprising a fixed tube H bearing a cylinder O<SP>1</SP> having a preferably synthetic rubber cap P engaging the casing I and by which the cylinder is reciprocated as the joint rotates. Lubricant passes through check valve P<SP>2</SP> into a chamber O<SP>2</SP>, whereupon it is compressed to open a spring loaded valve N<SP>2</SP> and flow into the joint F, G.
