Abstract
dl-Methionine is prepared by treating b -methylmercaptopropionaldehyde with an alkali metal bisulphite to give the bisulphite addition product, treating this with an inorganic cyanide to give b -methylmercaptopropionaldehyde cyanohydrin, treating this with ammonium bicarbonate, carbonate or carbamate to give methionine hydantoin, and hydrolysing this to dl-methionine. The bisulphite may be sodium or potassium, and the inorganic cyanide may be the alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, e.g. magnesium, or ammonium salt. The reactions may be performed in an aqueous medium, or in an aqueous water-soluble organic solvent such as a lower aliphatic alcohol, e.g. methanol. In the examples, dl-methionine is prepared by the above sequence of reactions, the hydantoin being hydrolysed with aqueous sodium hydroxide at 100 DEG C.
