Abstract

652,824. Vulcanizing in long lengths. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., HENSON, D. R., and GAMBLE, W. H. Oct. 1, 1948, No. 25576. [Class 70] A continuous sheet of rubber is vulcanized in transitu by passing it into a prism, the edges of which are constituted by rollers 3, 4, deflecting the sheet from within the prism so as to pass over the rollers, building up a number of layers, heating to vulcanize the rubber and removing the sheet from the outermost layer. Some of the rollers are driven by a sprocket chain 6. The sheet 34 enters the prism from the calender through a slot 35 in a side plate 5 and passes over a deflecting-plate 19 or roller to a roller 4a whence it is passed on to the outside of the prism. A backing-cloth 16 is fed in under the plate 19 over idler rollers 18 and is withdrawn at roller 4b. Vulcanizing is effected by heaters 30, 31. The vulcanized sheet is led off over rollers 25, 26. According to the Provisional Specification, nip rollers are provided to receive the sheet as it leaves the prism to prevent back slipping.
