Abstract

632,172. Glass-melting furnaces. ROGERS, F. H. (Copes Comite pour I'Exploitation des Procedes Sabaut Soc. Anon.). Oct. 16, 1946, No. 30828. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A furnace, as shown, is used in a glass melting process (see Group XXIII). The batch is introduced at 2 into the melting chamber 1 containing vertical electrodes 3 and separated from the gathering tank 4 by an apertured dividing wall 5. The melting is initiated by burners in the openings 6 and the combustion products pass via the conduits 7 to a chimney. The burners are then extinguished and the openings 6 connected to a chimney, and a suitable gas is passed through conduits 7, now disconnected from the chimney and adjustable at 8, and/or through adjustable holes 9 in the gathering tank, and makes its exit through the openings 6. This serves to transfer heat from the fusion zone to the charging zone.
