Abstract

639,780. Making cased electric conductors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 18, 1947, No. 10407. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXVI] Sheet-metal joints.-A tubular electric conductor comprises one or more metal tapes 3 folded longitudinally to form a tube and provided at each pair of meeting edges with a metal seam strip 1 pressed into contact with one surface of the tube, the strip 1 having projecting lugs 2 punched therefrom, which lugs pass between the meeting edges of the tube and are pressed outwardly into contact with the other surface of the tube. The tubular conductor may be formed around a cable core 4, 5 (Fig. 2), by feeding metal strips 6, 9 into a skelping die 7 together with the cable core 4, 5. Before reaching the die 7 the strip 9 passes through a machine 10 which punches out the lugs 2 and bends them up as shown in Fig. 1b. In the die 7 the lugs 2 are located between the meeting edges of the folded tape 6 and bent down to the positions shown in Fig. 1, c and d. The cable emerging from the die 7 may be armoured or sheathed in the normal manner. If the conductor is built up from a number of tapes the die 7 is formed with the appropriate number of guides and one punching tool 10 is provided for each seaming strip.
