Abstract
1323596 Electric cables KABEL-UND METALLWERKE GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE AG 8 Oct 1970 [9 Oct 1969] 47906/70 Heading H1A [Also in Divisions B3 and H2] A cable comprising a core enclosed by a tubular metal member having a wall thickness not greater than 0À3 mm. and having a longitudinal seam portion comprising a pair of tab portions which have their outer edges metallically integrated to provide a fluid impervious envelope for the core. As shown in Fig. 2 the core 11 comprising insulated conductors is surrounded by an envelope 12 formed from an aluminium strip 13 which is folded about the core. The tab portions are metallically integrated by a weld 19 bridging edges 18. The tab seam is folded to dispose it against the outer surface of envelope 12. A coating 20 of synthetic resin highly adherent to metal is applied. to the outer surface of envelope 12 and a jacketing coating 21 of synthetic resin, e.g. polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, is applied over coating 20. Apparatus, shown in Fig. 5 for making a cable as described above comprises a forming table T along which cable core 11 and metal tape M move longitudinally together to a tube forming device 40 which folds the metal tape into tubular form 13 about the core 11. The tape M has width greater than the circumference of core 11 so that the marginal portions form upstanding, radially disposed tab portions 15 in face to face relationship. The assembly moves along table T to a trimming device 41 where tab portions 15 are cut to a predetermined height. As the assembly moves along the table the fresh cut edges 18 of the tabs are brought into alignment with welding means 43 to weld edges 18 by continuous weld 19. The resultant tab seam 14 is folded over from its radial position by folding die 44. Coatings of metal adherent resin 20 and jacketing coating 21 are applied by extruders 45 and 46 respectively. Aluminium, copper or steel may be used for the tape M.
