Abstract
627,946. Aircraft landing lamps. HARLEY, M. C. Sept. 4, 1947, No. 24397. [Class 75(iii)] A retractable aircraft landing lamp a is actuated by an electric-motor-driven telescoping mechanism i with end limit switches, this mechanism being anchored at its fixed end to a bracket k held resiliently to a fixed base j. The lamp in its retracted position is thus resiliently held to its seating f in its housing e so preventing icing up. The bracket k has a pair of bolts m passing through holes in a base formed by the end flange of a bracket j which supports the housing e and carries the pivot d about which the lamp is turned. Compression springs n secured by adjustable nuts o surround the bolts m and abut against the end flange to draw the anchoring bracket k thereagainst. In operation, when the lamp a is retracted to abut against the seating surface f of the mounting e, a pre-adjusted limit switch allows continued operation of the telescoping mechanism i until the anchoring bracket k is pulled slightly away from the end flange against the action of the springs n. The pivoting arm b by which the lamp is carried is radiussed about its hinging centre to conform with the contour on the flanges c c of the main bracket and provide a fluidtight seal therewith. The mounting e may have a peripheral flange seated between a pair of ball races to allow rotation of the housing for use of the lamp as a searchlight.
