Abstract

The amount of volatile solvent or swelling agent remaining in artificial yarns after their production is maintained substantially constant from the time they are wound up at the spinning frame to the time that they enter a stretching machine in which they are stretched while in a softened condition. Uniformity of stretching is thus ensured. The process is particularly applicable to cellulose acetate yarns obtained by dry-spinning. Stretching may be effected in the presence of wet steam. As soon as the bobbins have been filled at the spinning frame, they may be transferred to containers which are then closed. The bobbins are kept in the containers until they are required for the stretching operation. The bobbins may then be removed but preferably they are left in the containers and the yarns are passed through narrow orifices in the containers as they are fed from the bobbins to the stretching machine. The bobbins may be kept in a container consisting of a rectangular box provided with pegs for the bobbins and with a removable lid which can be closed tightly, e.g. by bolts and wing-nuts, to give a substantially air-tight seal. The box may be provided, in the lid or sides, with orifices preferably of cross-section equal to or slightly greater than that of the yarn and preferably in line with the axes of the pegs. The orifices may be formed in small members which can be screwed into tapped holes in the side or lid of the box and which may be interchanged with members containing orifices of different size. The container may be large enough to hold a complete reel of bobbins. After stretching, the yarns may be shrunk to improve the extensibility. Cellulose ester yarns may be saponified. The process may be applied to yarns of other cellulose esters or ethers or of vinyl copolymers, or of polyacrylonitrile. Yarns consisting of single continuous filaments of large denier may be treated.
