Abstract

A graphite yarn is produced by heating a carbonaceous yarn up to graphitization temperature, longitudinally stretching the heated yarn by at least 1%, and cooling the yarn. The carbonaceous yarn may be a carbonized or graphitized yarn, which may be obtained from polyacrylonitrile or a synthetic or natural cellulose material. The carbonaceous yarn, with a weight suspended thereon, may be heated up to 2830 DEG C. in a hollow graphite cylinder heated by an induction coil. Monofilaments of the graphite yarn may have a Young's modulus of 10 x 106 lb/in.2 and a breaking strength of 12 x 104 lb/in.2.
