Abstract

A stretchable film may be prepared by casting a solution in alcohol of polyvinyl butyral resin and tricresyl phosphate on a temporary backing of smooth paper coated with an ethyl alcohol solution of polyvinyl acetate containing ground mica. Adhesives consist of (a) urea-formaldehyde resin, blown castor oil, butyl alcohol and xylol; (b) a mixture of alkyd resin and urea-formaldehyde resin; (c) polyvinyl butyral resin applied as a solution in glycol monoethyl ether together with tricresyl phosphate; (d) a mixture of a castor oil-citric acid alkyd resin and polyvinyl butyral dissolved in tertiary butyl alcohol mixed with a hydrocarbon solvent; (e) .a mixture of a copolymer of butadiene and styrene with ester gum and methyl acetyl ricinoleate in heptane and ethyl alcohol. The alkyd resin may be made by adding citric acid in small portions to heated castor oil, heating further, and cooling. The butadiene and styrene may be polymerised in aqueous emulsion containing sodium perborate tetrahydrate, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium cyanide, and acetaldehyde, and a phenolic antioxidant is added to the resulting dispersion before coagulating with ethyl alcohol.
