Abstract
A pressure-sensitive adhesive comprises as its essential ingredients cellulose nitrate and a polymerized heat-bodied non-drying oil, present in amount at least three times the weight of the cellulose nitrate, the adhesive being free from any solvent plasticiser for the cellulose nitrate. The composition may be prepared in the presence of solvents such as benzene, alcohol, acetone, xylene, or mixtures thereof. Heat-treated castor oil may be used as the polymerized non-drying oil. Pigments or dyes such as titanium pigments, burnt umber, or coal-tar dyes, may be incorporated in the composition. The ingredients may be mixed in any desired order. In an example, a solution for forming a transparent adhesive comprises 4.5 per cent of cellulose nitrate, 23.6 per cent of heat-bodied castor oil, 3.5 per cent of ester gum and a solvent mixture comprising benzene, methylated spirit and acetone. An adhesive tape is made by coating the solution on to a backing such as regenerated cellulose film, cellulose acetate film, or paper which has been treated to prevent undue penetration of the adhesive, e.g. paper which has been impregnated with a solution of glue, formaldehyde and glycerine. The adhesive composition may be applied to one side of the backing with the aid of a spreading knife. The solvents may be removed by passing the coated backing through a hot oven. To provide better anchorage of the adhesive, the surface of the backing may be first treated with a primer. A regenerated cellulose or cellulose acetate film may be primed with a solution or emulsion of casein and methyl methacrylate. A paper backing may be primed with an emulsion of p methyl methacrylate or cellulose nitrate, or with a dilute solution of the adhesive. Specification 575,678 is referred to.
