Abstract
597,838. Glass-melting furnaces. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. Sept. 3, 1945, No. 22571. Convention date, July 10, 1942. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Groups XI and XXIII] In the fining of molten glass the fining chamber c communicates with the melting zone a by a duct b leading from the surface of the molten glass therein, and with the working zone f, g, by a duct e leading from the bottom of the fining zone. Bubbly glass passes from the melting zone and forms a top layer on the already fined glass in the zone c where it is subjected to a current passed therethrough between -submerged electrodes d which may be of the kind described in Specifications 489,207, 500,803 and 506,696 [all in Group XI]. The bubbly layer becomes heated and the bubbles disperse so that the layer in becoming fixed becomes heavier and merges with the already fined glass in the zone which then passes on to the working chamber. In the form shown the melting zone is gas heated.
