Abstract

583,340. Removing engine valves. STEVENS, A. H. (T.C.M. Manufacturing Co.). Oct. 19, 1944, No. 20249. [Class 61 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A device for removing valve assemblies from an internal-combustion engine comprises a pair of shoes 29, 30, engaging respectively with a fixed part such as a tappet 22 and with the end of a valve stem 17, the shoes being separated by hydraulic means to force the assembly outwardly out of the cylinder block 7. The assembly shown comprises a grooved valve guide bushing 13 mounted in an opening 14 of the block. A reservoir member 25 mounted on a supporting pillar 32 encloses a pump cylinder 33, the plunger of which may be reciprocated by a lever 44 to draw oil from the chamber into the cylinder through a'valve 51 and deliver it past a valve 53 to a casing 36, connected through a flexible pipe 62 to a member 26 hinged to the support 32 and having a passage 74 through which oil flow passes beneath a spring-urged piston 76 connected to the movable shoe 29. After removal of the assembly, the pump cylinder is rotated through a stop collar 58, thereby registering a port 56 in the pump cylinder with a port 55 in the wall of casing 36 and allowing a return flow of oil back to the reservoir while the movable shoe returns to the position shown in Fig. 1.
