Abstract
580,368. Plate heat-exchangers. THORNTON, A. A. (Aktiebolaget Separator). Jan. 1, 1944, No. 25. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 24, 1944.] [Class 64 (iii)] In a plate heat-exchanger comprising heatexchange plates having openings for the passage of fluid, a number of juxtaposed heat-exchange plates are permanently and tightly joined to each other, by welding, soldering or otherwise, along or close to their edges and at appropriate openings in the plates, to form one or more sets, tight joints being formed by packings between the sets themselves, if there are more than one, and between the set or sets and other parts of the exchanger. The apparatus shown is composed of two sets of plates 4, 5 which are of identical shape, alternate plates facing in opposite directions. Each plate, which is corrugated and has four openings 32, 33, 38, 39, is pressed out in one direction to form a rim 30 along its edge and runs around one pair of openings 32, 33, and is pressed out in the opposite direction to form a ridge 31 around the plate near its edge and around the other pair of openings 38, 39. The plate makes contact with and is welded to its adjacent plates along the rims on one side and along the ridges on the other. Spacing lugs 17, 18 pressed up from the plates are also welded to adjacent plates. Inlet and outlet openings 34, 35 for one fluid communicate with the spaces 36, and inlet and outlet openings 39', 40 communicate with the intermediate spaces 37. Between the two sets of plates is a plate 9 with openings 10. Rings 19 of stainless steel, Fig. 4, provided with rubber packing 20, which may be protected by thin flexible stainless steel sheet, may be screwed into these openings. Alternatively, a rubber packing ring 20, Fig. 7, may be fitted in the opening. The openings 10 may be closed by thin sheets 22 of stainless steel. The two sets of plates are held between the frame 1 and pressure plate 13 which is urged towards the frame by screws 14. The plates are slidably suspended from a rod 15, and are guided by a rod 16. In another form, the plates are welded together in pairs along their rims, and packing pieces are interposed between the ridges of successive pairs.
