Abstract
553,735. Granulated soap. LEVER BROS. & UNILEVER, Ltd. Aug. 1, 1941, No. 9817. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1940. [Class 91] Soap granules are coated with a substance to maintain them in a form resistant to disintegration and to reduce the amount of soap dust formed therefrom. The dust may be formed through various causes and the function of the coating agents may vary accordingly. In general, the coating agents comprise two groups of materials. The first group consists of substances which are hygroscopic and maintain the moisture content of the granules, also have the property of binding the dust particles thereto, and reduce the formation of static charges on the particles. The second group consists of substances which primarily strengthen the soap granules and also bond the dust particles; they are preferably insoluble in the soap and may be water soluble, water dispersible, or water insoluble. In the last case, the granules are only discontinuously coated. Substances specified in the first group comprise polyhydric alcohols, such as glycerol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, sorbitol and mannitol ; inorganic and organic phosphates, such as dipotassium phosphate, alkyl phosphates of formula MRHPO 4 such as potassium inethyl or ethyl phosphate, sodium potassium ethyl phosphate, triethanolamine ethyl phosphate, and phosphates of formula (RO) 3 PO such as tricresyl phosphate, tributyl phosphate, dibutyl phenyl phosphate, trixylenyl phosphate, diphenyl cresyl phosphate and phosphate esters of glycol ethers ; high boiling white oils or other oils, water soluble sulphonated oils or a waxy material such as carbowax. Mixtures of these materials specified comprise glycerol and dipotassium phosphate or sodium potassium ethyl phosphate or potash coconut oil soap, water soluble sulphonated oils and lithium chloride. Substances specified in the second group comprise methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, corn or potato starch, soluble starches and dextrins. The soap granules may be coated by allowing them to fall once or repeatedly through a mist of the atomized coating material or by tumbling them in a rotary drum to which a spray of the atomized coating material is admitted.
