Abstract
1311906 Phosphonate esters containing N-methylol groups FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 15 June 1970 [14 June 1969] 28798/70 Heading C2P [Also in Division D1] Novel compounds of the general formula: wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> which may be the same or different each represents an alkyl radical, n is an integer from 1 to 4 and Y is H or -CH 2 OH are obtained by reacting a compound of the formula with aqueous formaldehyde or with paraformaldehyde at 10‹ to 70‹ C., preferably at pH 8 to 9. The products are useful as flameproofing agents for cellulose fibre material. The compounds II may be obtained by reacting the corresponding hydroxyalkyl phosphonic acid (e.g. hydroxymethyl phosphonic acid diethyl ester) with phosgene to form the corresponding chlorocarbonic acid ester and then treating the latter with ammonia.
