540,718. Reverse gearing. HINDMARCH, T., and MODERN WHEEL DRIVE, Ltd. Jan. 1, 1940, No. 10831/41. Divided out of 540,170. [Class 80 (ii)] Power transmission mechanism comprises an input shaft a and an output shaft d connected by gearing such that a propeller or other driven device will be located on the same side of the gearing as the prime mover, the said gearing including a pair of pressure oil operated control coupling devices and means for obtaining a speed reduction in reverse. The input shaft a carries the outer members of a friction clutch e, and the outer members of a brake f support a planetary compound bevel gear h which meshes with a gear connected to the clutch outer members and with a gear g on an intermediate shaft b. The latter engages by gears c<SP>1</SP> with a spindle b<SP>2</SP> gearing by bevel pinions c with the output shaft d. In a modification a countershaft is used between the input and output shafts a, d, a pair of friction clutches being mounted thereon. The outer members of these clutches carry gear wheels gearing with pinions on the input shaft, an idler pinion being interposed in the gears associated with one of the clutches.
