Abstract
544,871. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 16, 1941, No. 8965. Convention date, July 16, 1940. [Class 38 (v) ] In a gas-blast switch, for example, as shown in Specification 544,017, prevention of the emission of flame in the wake of the movable contact 2 as it is withdrawn from the contactfingers 1<SP>1</SP>, is achieved by the creation of a space 11 above the hole 6' in the barrier' 6, which space is in direct communication at 10 with the blast-conduit 5, whereby a separate stream of air traverses the space 11 into the chute-passage 12 and either acts as a barrier to flame or drives the flame into the chute. The wall 14 is extended in the direction of contact-separation to provide the equivalent of a contact-pause. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the space 11 has no outlet passage 12 for the air from conduit 5, so that a higher pressure prevails in that space than in space 13 and prevents the entry of flame into the former space.
