Abstract

483,649. Electric vehicles ; driving-gearing. MORRISON & SONS. Ltd., A. E., MORRISON, A. E., and MORRISON, A. C. Oct. 20, 1936, No. 28512. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] An electrically-propelled road vehicle having a storage battery is provided with a controller adapted to give different motor speeds, and a transmission device which automatically allows slip in the drive from the motor to the road wheels. The transmission device may be an hydraulic coupling or a centrifugal or other automatic friction clutch. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the motor 2 is supplied with power from a battery 9 through a controller 5, and drives the wheels through an hydraulic coupling 6 and a propeller shaft 3. The coupling is mounted in a yoke 22 fixed to the end cover 23 of the motor casing. The battery comprises units 9 arranged as shown, and brought into use by switching arrangements as described in Specification 416,042. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, an expanding clutch member 24 is driven by the motor shaft 16 and is adapted to be expanded by a conical member 34 into contact with a member 25 mounted so as to drive the final driven shaft 26. Epicyclic reducing gear shown diagrammatically at 27 is provided between the shafts 16 and 26 within a gear box 28. The cone 34 is connected by a rod 33 to a lever 31 spring- loaded at 35 and operated by a solenoid 29 connected in series with the motor driving the shaft 16. When the motor is stationary or is rotating at a low speed the clutch is disengaged by the spring 35. As the motor speeds up the current in the solenoid increases and the cone 34 is moved to cause the clutch to engage, this movement being retarded by a dash-pot 32.
