Abstract

In impregnating, finishing, or stiffening fibrous materials such as textiles and in sticking fibrous materials together, waterproof products are obtained by the use of aqueous emulsions of polymerized vinyl compounds containing a hydrocarbon of high molecular weight, such as paraffin oil or paraffin wax. Suitable polymerides include polyvinyl esters, acrylic acid esters, mixed polymerizates of these esters, and vinyl ethers and/or vinylbenzene hydrocarbons, vinyl ketones and the mixed polymerizates from these compounds and the above esters, ethers or hydrocarbons. The hydrocarbon may be added to an emulsion of the polymeride, or the compounds may be emulsified together or the vinyl compound may be polymerized in the presence of the hydrocarbon. According to examples: (1) an aqueous paraffin-wax emulsion is added to an aqueous emulsion of acrylic acid ethyl ester, polymerized in emulsion; the product gives a waterproof elastic finish to textiles; (2) a paraffin-oil emulsion is added to an emulsion containing polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate, toluene, dibutyl phthalate and water; the product is used for stiffening felts; (3) acrylic acid ethyl ester and vinyl isobutyl ether are polymerized together as an emulsion, and a paraffin-wax emulsion is added; (4) an aqueous paraffin-wax emulsion is added to an aqueous emulsion prepared by the joint polymerization of acrylic acid methyl ester, vinyl isobutyl ether and vinyl benzene; the product may be used to prepare waterproof elastic plaited materials; (5) a paraffin - oil emulsion is added to an aqueous emulsion containing polyvinylmethylketone and tricresyl phosphate. The products are suitable for the finishing and stiffening of hats made from felt, straw, regenerated cellulose, bast fibre, or artificial silk.
