Abstract

Compositions for impregnating, finishing, stiffening, or sticking fibrous materials to obtain waterproof products comprise aqueous emulsions containing polymerized vinyl compounds and an aluminium salt of a fatty acid, such as aluminium oleate or stearate. Suitable synthetic resins include polyvinyl esters, acrylic acid esters, mixed polymerizates of these esters, vinyl ethers and/or vinylbenzene hydrocarbons, vinyl ketones and the mixed polymerizates from vinyl ketones and the above esters, ethers or hydrocarbons. The compositions may be made by adding the aluminium salt to the emulsion of the polymeride; emulsifying together the polymeride and the aluminium salt or polymerizing the vinyl compound in the presence of the aluminium salt. According to examples: (1) a polyvinyl butyrate emulsion prepared according to Specification 466,173 is stirred with a solution of aluminium stearate in toluene; (2) a mixture of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate is polymerized as an aqueous emulsion and stirred with phthalic acid diamyl ester and a solution of aluminium stearate in tetrachlormethane. The product gives waterproof elastic finishes. The products are used in the finishing and stiffening of felt hats and hats made from straw, regenerated cellulose, bast fibre or artificial silk; for the waterproof impregnation of textile fabrics and plaited materials and for sticking together textile materials.
