Abstract

461,512. Machines for working land. HARGREAVES & CO., Ltd., W., and HARGREAVES, W. Sept. 6, 1935, No. 24834. [Class 6 (i)] A machine for piercing turf &c. for aerating purposes comprises a wheeled framework, a number of positively driven boring tools mounted on a support adapted to be raised and lowered, and means controlled by the position or movement of the tools for automatically advancing the machine step by step, themachine being at rest while the turf is pierced. The machine may have two front wheels wand a rear wheel w<1>. The tools d are carried by a gear box b movable vertically on guide rods a<6> by means of links c, levers c<2>, a cross-handle-bar c<6>, and a spring c'. A motor M is mounted on the gear box b and drives the tools through spur gearing in the box. The tools d may be flat, spiral, gouge-shaped, &c. The stroke of the gear box may be limited by an adjustable stop engaging a cross-bar c<9> connecting the levers c<2> together. The machine is moved automatically as the tools rise by rotation of the wheels w by ratchet gearing d<1> &c. driven by movement of the gear box b. The raising and lowering mechanism may be locked in position for transport by a pivoted lever c<8> engaging the rod c<9>.
