Abstract

454,219. Knitting. WILDT & CO., Ltd., and LEEDHAM, L. H., Adelaide Works, Leicester. Feb. 22, 1935, No. 5780. [Class 74 (ii)] An instantaneously acting check device acts on the spindle of one of a pair of take-up rollers to arrest reverse movement during the periodic resetting of a loading device which is operatively connected to a roller spindle through a one-way drive, the loading device being of the type which is capable of storing energy when actuated by a setting device and afterwards imparting it, as a unidirectional torque, to one of the rollers. The take-up roller 14 is rotated in one direction through a one-way roller clutch 19, 20, 22, by the pull of a spring 26, or a weight, acting at the end of a rod 23, which is slidably adjustable in the outer member 19 of the clutch, so as to vary its effective radius. When the spring has turned the roller 14 through a predetermined angle, a follower 30 mounted on the outer clutch member 19 engages a fixed cam or cams 31 as the ring 11, on which the take-up mechanism is mounted, revolves, and rotates the member 19 in the reverse direction against the pull of the spring, thus resetting the clutch. A similar and oppositely acting clutch 33, 34, 35 at the other end of the roller 14 acts instantaneously to ensure that this roller shall not be rotated in the reverse direction by the pull of the fabric during the resetting. The associated draw-off roller 15 is urged against the roller 14 by springs 37 (not shown), whose pressure is adjustable by screws 38. Cams 41 borne on the spindle of the roller 15 and bearing against the roller 14, can be rotated by handles 42 to separate the rollers for the insertion of the fabric between them. The fabric passes' off roller 15 and between it and the roller 16 on to which it is wound. The ends of the spindle 44 of the roller 16 are carried in slotted tubular supports 45, 46 and the roller 16 is urged against the roller 15 by springs 47 whose pressure may be adjustable and which are of such resilience that, as the diameter and weight of the fabric roll increase, the pressure between the rollers remains constant; this pressure serves to transmit the drive to roller 16. Conveniently situated withdrawal gates 49, through which the ends of the spindle 44 may be withdrawn, are provided in the supports 45, 46 and are normally closed by covers 50. Adjustable stops 55, 56 co-operate with abutments on the outer clutch member 19 to limit rotation in either direction ; the stop 55 prevents over-resetting due to the momentum of the clutch member 19. The rollers (e.g. rollers 14 and 15) may be covered with resilient rubber. Specification 376,837 is referred to.
