CLOTH ROLL SUPPORTING MEANS FOR CLOTH SPREADING MACHINES This application is a division of my copending application, Ser. No. 665,666, filed Aug. -I8, 1967,- now US. Pat. No. 3,495,8l7,datedFeb.17,1970. g
This invention relates generally to thefield of cloth laying devices, and more particularly to an improved cloth roll supporting rod or spindle which can be conveniently'inserted into the hollow bore existing at the center of a cylindrically shaped cloth roll, from twhich a cloth web is drawn.
It is among the principal objects of the present invention to provide a spindle forming a cloth roll supporting means which is adapted to be adjusted for cloth rolls of varying internal diameters, and which may conveniently engage a clothroll prior to engagement with'the cloth laying carriage, so that replacement of an exhausted cloth roll may be accomplished in a minimum period oftime.
Another object of the invention lies in the provision of an improved cloth roll supporting means, in which the cost of fabrication may be of a reasonable low order, with consequent wide sale, distribution and use.
These objects, as well as other incidental ends and advantages, will more fully appear in the progress of the following disclosure, and be pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing, to which reference will be made in the specification, the F10. is a sectional view of a cloth roll supporting means embodying the invention.
In accordance with the invention, the device, generally indicated by reference character includes a main shaft 170 having first and second ends 171 and 172, respectively, and defining a longitudinally arranged bore 173. An end plug 174 closes one one end of the of the bore 173, and the opposite end thereof is surrounded by a threaded terminal 175. A threaded member 176 engages the terminal 175, the other end 177 being provided with a handwheel 178 for convenient rotatron.
A sliding 'shaft 178a is positioned within the bore 173, one end 179 thereof contacting the inner end of the threaded member 176. The opposite end 179a bears against a spring 180, also disposed within the bore 173 and having an oppositely disposed end abutting the plug 174.
At convenient intervals, the shaft 178 is provided with annular cam members 181 engaging pivotally mounted followers 182, for an action resembling that ofthe engagement ofa rack and pinion. The outer ends 183 of the cam members project through openings 184 in the in the main shaft to engage the inner surfaces of cloth rolls (not shown). An outer sleeve 185 is provided with recesses 186 to facilitate engagement with corresponding structure on the clothlaying carriage, and prevent movement of the means 20 laterally with respect to the principal axis of movement of the carriage element.
lclaim:
1. Cloth roll engaging means comprising: a main hollow shaft having first and second ends, and a hollow longitudinally disposed bore therein, means closing one end of said bore, a threaded terminal means at the second end of said bore, a threaded member engaging said terminal means and projecting into said bore, a sliding shaft disposed within said bore and having a first end contacting said threaded member, resilient means at the second end thereof urging said sliding shaft against said threaded member, said sliding shaft having annular cam members thereon, cam followers pivotally mounted on said main shaft and engaging said annular cams for the transmission of motion therethrough, said cam followers having outer ends projecting throughopenings in said main shaft to engage the inner surface ofa cloth roll.
