[Class 5 (i).] The invention relates to apparatus for pro ducing a composite loaf by dividing severa loaves into fractional parts, selecting fractions from different loaves and aggregating the selected fractions into loaf-like formation the composite loaf so formed may then be trayed and packaged. Some or all the fractions forming a composite loaf may be obtained from different kinds of bread, the fractions may vary in size and the fractions themselves may be sliced. The loaves to be divided are placed in orderly progression on the feed plate 10 of the machine and are fed forward first by a conveyer 11 and then by pushers 14 mounted on another conveyer 16, through slicing mechanism comprising knives 19, a slotted grid plate 20, and a plate 35 resiliently and shiftably supported over the plate 20 for preventing displacement of the slices emerging from the knives 19. The sliced loaf is then separated into four fractions by being forced by the oncoming loaves along four channels the sides of which are formed by guides 25 and partition 30, 31, 32 and the bottoms by plates 1 .. 4. These plates are pivotally supported on a rod 21 with their rear ends flush with the grid-plate 20, their front ends having down-turned lips for normally engaging a table 5. The guides 25 are adjustably supported on brackets 24 on the table 5 and are formed at their rear ends with resilient wings 26, Fig. 7 ; the wings 26 serve to tensionally engage the opposite ends of loaves which have been slightly expanded lengthwise by the slicing operation and restore them substantially to their pre-sliced length.
