Abstract

Activated or other sludge which has been separated from sewage by sedimentation is concentrated in a thickener fitted with sludgeraking mechanism and then passed to a digestion tank. The concentration may take place in the presence of acid-forming or septic bacteria. Effluent liquid from the thickener can be returned with the raw sewage for further treatment.
