Abstract

395,410. Shock-absorbers. NEWTON, N. B., Newton & Bennett Works, Valetta Road, Acton, London. Jan. 16, 1932, No. 1346. [Class 108 (iii).] The two parts of a piston-type hydraulic shock-absorber are pivotally connected direct to integral or fixed parts of the sprung and unsprung portions respectively of a vehicle so that the shock-absorber resists at least rebound of the vehicle suspension and has a substantial angular movement combined with its extending and closing movement. In one form the cylinder a and piston-rod r of the shockabsorber are pivoted, respectively, to brackets b, d secured, respectively, to the vehiclesuspension spring c and to the dumb-iron e. The cylinder a communicates through a part m, Fig. 2, with a reservoir formed integral with the cylinder a. The piston-rod r has bores u and screwed-in jet v and the piston g is recessed at q and has ports s adapted to be closed in one direction by a non-return valve t<2>. A spring-pressed piston n in the reservoir maintains pressure on the working fluid, a projection n<3> on the piston preventing covering of the port m by a cup-leather o on the piston. The shock-absorber is charged with fluid by removing studs m<2>, p<2> from the reservoir, inserting a rod, adapted to be screwed into a nut n<5> on the piston, through the end of the reservoir, and withdrawing the piston n against the action of the spring p, fluid being then poured in through the aperture m<l>. The packing for the piston-rod includes a sleeve h having notches h<1> to facilitate screwing into the end of the cylinder a, a washer h<2> of whalebone fibre, a hat-leather i, a brass washer j, grease packing k, and a nut l adapted to be secured by a grub screw l<1>. The shock-absorber may be mounted longitudinally, laterally, or in any intermediate position and friction shockabsorbers may be incorporated in the pivots. Specifications 296,897 and 296,911, [both in Class 108 (iii), Springs &c.], are referred to.
