Abstract
363,197. Shock-absorbers. SMITH, W. J., Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, U.S.A. Jan. 28, 1931, No. 2827. [Class 108 (iii).] A shock-absorber particularly for use on vehicles comprises a body member 1 having internal threads which mesh with a corresponding thread on an intermediate member 8 which is threaded internally with threads of a steeper pitch to receive a cylindrical member 9. The member 9 is provided with discs 11, 12 and is free to rotate on a rod 10 which passes through a stuffing- box 4 provided in a screw cap 2 closing the member 1. The threads are reversible and for normal purposes have a pitch angle of about 20‹. 363,207. Shock absorbers. AKTIEBOLAGET SUPERIOR and WESTERBERG, A., 10, Kungstradgardsgatan, Stockholm.-(Assignees of Everstam, E. A. ; 53, Bondegatan, Stockholm.) Feb. 2, 1931, No. 3334. Convention date, Feb. 3, 1930. [Class 108 (iii).] In a hydraulic shock-absorber for automobiles in which at least one cylinder and piston are arranged between the vehicle frame and axle and in which a valve member controls a byepass channel between the cylinder and an outer space the valve means is subjected to the action of forces of inertia at the upward and downward movement of the vehicle axle to introduce liquid under pressure from a container to one side of the piston or pistons, in order to cause the piston or pistons to move in one direction. In one form, pistons 5 having non- return valves 10 reciprocate in cylinders 9. During small relative movements of the frame and axle oil passing the non-return valves 10 is forced past spring-loaded valves 19, 20 into a container 31 formed integral with the shock-absorber casing. The two cylinders are connected by a passage in which an inertia-controlled valve 12 can establish connection through a port 13 between the lower ends of the cylinders and a chamber 14 ; simultaneously a channel 30 is opened to permit oil under pressure to pass from the container 31 to the underside of the pistons the arrangement being such that, when the vehicle wheel enters a depression oil flows from under one piston and oil under pressure is admitted below the other so that the car frame is retained at about its original level, the action being reversed when the wheel passes out of the depression. The valve 12 is under the control of a weighted lever 26 and is normally kept in neutral position by a helical spring 16 and its V-shaped end 17 which engages a dowel 18. The lever 26 may be provided with a spring 34, Fig. 4a, adapted to strike against the'casing and give an upward impulse to the lever. The chamber 31 is provided with a safety valve 32. In amodification the oil under pressure may be supplied by a separate pump and control by the valve 12 may be replaced by separate inertia-controlled valves adapted to separately admit the pressure fluid and control the escape of fluid.
