Abstract

An artificial wood is made by compressing, with binding agents capable of hardening under heat, bundles of vegetable fibres which all lie in the same direction and in which the natural binding between the fibres remains undestroyed. Examples of binding agents are natural or artificial resins, caoutchouc, caseine, or albumen. Examples of vegetable fibres are divided or whole stalks of papyrus, bamboo, straw or reeds, cane trash, or wood sliced into small boards or ribbons. Before mixing with the binder a fungicide may be added to the vegetable matter to prevent decay. The products may be compressed in moulds, pieces being obtained which may be directly used as planks, boards, &c. The outer layers may be more heavily impregnated than the inner.
