343,912. Recording rest or motion. HIBBERT, H., 144, Victoria Street, Newton, Hyde, Cheshire, and HOWITT, F., 51, Moreton Street, Chadderton, Oldham. Nov. 19, 1929, No. 35278. [Classes 106 (iii) and 106 (iv).] Device for recording rest or motion of internalcombustion engines comprises a diaphragm 17 acted on through the pipe 25 by pressure variations in the induction pipe, oil supply or exhaust of the engine and by a spring 20 and having a rod 19 fixed to it which engages a rod 22 pivoted on the upper part of a bracket 21 and carrying the spring- urged stylus 23 for marking on the paper disc 15, resting on the non-resilient plate 16 and mounted on clockwork mechanism 14, when the pressure on the diaphragm falls due to the engine running. Modifications are described in which the diaphragm 17 is actuated by increased pressure from the oil pump of the engine and in which the stylus 23 is connected to a Bourdon tube actuated by decrease or increase of pressure and in which outer and inner lines corresponding to rest or motion of the engine are marked on the disc 15 by the stylus 23 being connected to a piston or Bourdon tube actuated by the fluctuations in pressure. The above apparatus can be combined with means for recording motion of the vehicle, Fig. 4, comprising a swinging rocker arm 26 pivoted at 27 and adjustably carrying by means of the screw 29 the stylus arm 28 adjustable angularly and carrying a light spring 30 carrying the stylus 31 so that this stylus and the stylus 23, guided by member 23a, for recording rest or motion of the engine can be brought close together for recording on the disc 15. Various methods of mounting the stylus are shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7.
