Latches, sliding; striking plates for latches.- A latch for vehicle doors has a cylindrical bolt 8 urged to shot position by a spring 24 surrounding an extension rod 12 secured in a bore in bolt 8 and between a guide member 13 secured to the back-plate 3 and a member 15 secured to the rod 12. Member 15 has a flat surface 16 working against plate 3 to prevent rotation of the bolt, and a projection 17 adapted, when the bolt is retracted, to be engaged by a catch which retains the bolt in retracted position. The catch comprises a hollow member 18 slidable on a hollow pillar 21 and an enclosed spring 19 urging the catch away from plate 3. A lateral projection 22 on member 18 is guided by a screw 23, and an extension 20 projects as shown through the cover 6 of the lock. Bolt 8 is guided in a bored boss 11 provided on an end plate 4 in one with plate 3. The nose 9 of the bolt is of truncated pyramid form, rounded at 10 where it engages the striking plate 5, which has an aperture 25 engaged by the bolt when shot, and an abutment 26 engaged by and pressing in extension 20 to release the catch and allow the bolt to shoot when it registers with aperture 25. The bolt may be withdrawn by an inside handle 14 fixed on rod 12, or by other means, an alternative being described in which a vertical lever with handle at its upper end operates a sliding rod having a pin-and-slot lost-motion connection with the bolt. The bolt may be withdrawn from outside by a handle the spindle of which passes through a square aperture 28 in a follower 29 adapted to engage member 15, and held in normal inoperative position by a spring 30. Withdrawal of the bolt by the outside handle may be prevented by a member 31 rotatable by a finger-piece 33 to lie in the path of a projection 32 on the follower. When the bolt is fully home clearance is provided between the boss 11 and member 15 so that the bolt has axial floating engagement to allow for distortion of the vehicle body.
