Straightening.-The adjustable supports for the lower rolls of 'plate straightening machines are operated so that different portions have different lengths of travel towards the rolls so as to deflect the rolls to vary the pressure on different parts of the work. Two series of supporting rolls 64 for the lower straightening rolls 62 are mounted in bearings 66, 67 connected in pairs by struts 68, the bearings 66 being pivoted at 70 to a screw adjusted member 69 having a grooved guide 69<a> so that the bearings may be tilted. The bearings 67 are provided with discs 73, 74, of which the disc 74 is loose and is recessed on it, underside to engage the end of a screw 75. The amount of adjustment given to the bearings 66 is different from that given to the bearings 67 so that the supporting rolls may assume a V or inverted V form. For this purpose the screws 71, 75 are adjusted by worm gear from a handle 79, the pitch of the screws in the gear ratio or both being different for the respective screws. The screws may have conical surfaces 80 so that they may be clamped by screws 82 and rings 81 to their worm wheels 77 after preliminary adjustment. The supporting rolls may be dispensed with and a series of adjustable rests used, and the adjustment may be effected by cams or wedges.
