Abstract

262,106. B³chi, A. Nov. 30, 1925, [Convention date]. M o t o r power plant.-In an internal - combustion engine having a precompressor and an exhaust turbine, the dimensions of the exhaust conduit between the engine and the turbine, the entrance cross-sections of the turbine, and the control of the discharge of the exhaust gases are such that after the start of the exhaust period the pressure in front of the turbine rises to a high value which is maintained during the greater part of the exhaust period of the cylinder in question and falls to its lowest value only at the end of the exhaust or the beginning of the following inlet period. At normal loads the lower pressure limit is lower than the charging air pressure. The moment of discharge of the next cylinder must be sufficiently delayed to allow of the low pressure being reached. For this purpose in the eight-cylinder engine shown the exhausts are arranged in two sets, each set comprising the cylinders with cranks at 180‹ or parallel, and exhaust to two separate turbines 23, 24. The inlet and exhaust valves of a cylinder are both open during the low pressure period to give a scavenging effect. The turbine may drive the precompressor.
