Abstract

260,049. Goss Printing Press Co. of England, Ltd., and Smith, E. J. July 23, 1925. Feeding webs. -A web-renewing mechanism for a printing-press comprises a pair of rollers normally spaced apart, around one of which the active web passes and to the other of which the end of a reserve web may be gripped in readiness to have adhesive applied to it so that upon the operation of a handlever the rollers are brought together to cause the webs to adhere together. Movement of the hand-lever may also be arranged to bring rollrotating belts for the reserve roll into operation. When applied to multi-deck presses special platforms are provided to give access to the web-renewing mechanisms of the upper decks, the platforms being movable to allow hoisting of the new rolls into position. In machines in which the new rolls are inserted laterally into the machine on trucks, the roll-supporting arms or the supports of the roll-rotating belts may be pivoted to allow them to be moved to such a position as not to obstruct the entry of the trucks. Fig. 3 shows a press with four pairs of web-rolls A, B in two decks. Each pair of rolls is provided with a web-renewing mechanism comprising a pair of rollers C, D, Fig. 2, carried by arms C', D' on shafts C', D<2> geared together by quadrants C<3>, D<3> and operable in unison by a hand-lever D<4> on one of the shafts C<2>, D<2>. The rollers are normally spaced apart. Arms E<1>, F<1> mounted lossely on the shafts C<2>, D<2> are provided with rollers E, F yieldingly held by springs G, G<1>, in contact with the rollers C, D and are connected bv slotted links F<3>, E<3> to short arms F', E<2> fast on the shafts D<3>, C<2>. By this arrangement, as the rollers C, D are brought together, the rollers E, F are moved out of contact with the rollers C, D. In operation the active web from one of the rolls passes round the adjacent roller C or D, to the press. When the roll is nearly exhausted, the end of the reserve web is inserted between the other roller D or C and the contacting gripping roller E or F, and paste is applied thereto. Upon operating the hand-lever D<4>, the rollers C, D are brought together to adhere the webs and at the same time the gripping roller is moved clear of the reserve web. The active web is then severed by the machine attendant. The operation of the hand. lever D<1> may start the operation of web-rotating belts H by operating an electro-magnetic or other clutch connecting the driving wheel H<4> of the belts to the driving gear of the press. To allow access to the upper rolls in the machine shown in Fig. 3, platforms I, I<1> are provided and these platforms are slidably mounted on rails I' so as to move apart to allow new rolls to be hoisted into position. The webs from the outer rolls may pass to the press either over the framework or beneath it. In a press provided with a single tier of rolls, a combined ladder and platform may move laterally on guides at the end of the press.
