Abstract

An insert for use with a standard child's car seat provides the seat with the extra support required for small babies, e.g. premature babies and babies weighing less than 3.5kg. The insert is designed to maintain the infant in an upright position and comprises: a neck support 2 which helps to maintain a clear airway; a lumbar support 3; a trunk support 4; a sitting cushion 5, and a crotch support 6. Openings are provided for the restraining straps of the standard car seat.

<p>Description</p>
<p>Car Seat Insert The invention relates to an extra seat within a standard new born car seat.</p>
<p>When a low birth weight or pre term infant is placed in a standard new born seat they are prone to head roll' and slouching. This may mean they may not be able to maintain a patent airway whilst secured within the car seat.</p>
<p>To overcome this, the present invention proposes extra support areas at various points within the car seat insert, which aim to correctly position the infant, allowing for maximum potential to maintain a patent airway.</p>
<p>When placed in the car seat, it will maintain the infant up right, with chest slightly forward and slight flexion on the neck to prevent airway obstruction.</p>
<p>An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings.</p>

Claims (4)

  1. <p>Car Seat Insert 1. Car seat insert that will help maintain the infant
    in an upright position
  2. 2. As the infant will be upright, the neck support will cause slight flexion of the head into the occipital space to maintain the upper airway
  3. 3. The lumbar support eases the chest forward to maintain lower airways
  4. 4. The crotch wedge prevents slipping or slouching onto crotch strap</p>
